Ms. Jahanara M Wattoo, a provincial leader of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and in-charge PPP social media wing Punjab has strongly condemned today’s attack on noted writer, columnist and TV anchor Raza Rumi led to the unfortunate death of his driver Mustafa.
In a statement issued here from the PPP Punjab media office on Friday, Ms. Jahanara M Wattoo said this latest attack on Pakistan’s renowned liberal and progressive journalist further confirms the worsening climate for liberals as well as press freedom in Pakistan.
“This assault on freedom of expression must be immediately investigated and those responsible must be prosecuted. Anything less will only open the door to further attacks against media professionals and activists,” demanded Ms. Jahanara.
She also said that the Pakistani government has failed to protect journalists and not doing its duty to protect journalists. Earlier this year, three Express Media Group media workers were killed by gunmen in Karachi. This would mark the fourth attack on Express staff members in recent months.
She demanded the government and related authorities must launch a swift and thorough inquiry into this attack and bring those responsible to justice as well as provide protection to the journalist community.
